Hi, I’m Maria, and if you’re here, you’re probably wondering who is behind this and why it exists. That is fair. So let me tell you.
I am a veteran. I served for twenty years. My husband is still on active duty, which means our family still moves. Every two or three years, we pack up and begin again somewhere new. I have two wonderful boys, and we have been homeschooling for six years.
Moving so often taught me that every new place starts at zero: a new state, new homeschool laws, new surroundings, and new people to find. I have a small window to understand it all before we move again, while making sure my children never lose the thread of their own learning along the way.
If military life taught me anything, it is that our surroundings shape us. The people we find and the community we build help teach our children how to navigate the world and become good stewards of it. Exposure matters. Finding the right people, opportunities and resources matters.
Truthfully, I built this selfishly at first. I wanted to solve my own problem. Somewhere along the way, I realized it was bigger than my story.
When a family is new to homeschooling, they are often strangers to a whole world that already exists around them. There is no shortage of curriculum, beautiful websites, online schools, or educational resources. I have used and loved many of them. Access to knowledge was never the problem. But none of it replaces human connection, and very little simply shows you what community already exists near you.
I know what true community feels like. I have experienced it in different countries and across multiple states. It is the greatest resource any of us will ever have. I built Find Your Learning so fewer families have to feel alone - and so they can discover that their people may already be just around the corner.
FYL is a place where families can discover local groups, events, classes, programs, places, and people. It is also a place where group leaders and local providers can share what they are creating, keep their information accurate, and help the right families find them.
I also want to be clear about how this works, because it matters to me. Here, you are a family, never a product. FYL is being built as a mission-first community resource. What makes it stronger is how many of us show up and share, not what anyone could learn about you. And no algorithm decides what you see. I believe every family, and every child, has their own journey to find, so FYL leaves the finding to you.
Privacy matters here. So does respecting the different missions, values, and approaches of the families, groups, and providers who make up each local community. We take both seriously, which is why there will always be a real person willing to listen as FYL grows.
As FYL grows, I hope to bring on local FYL Ambassadors - people you should know in your own community, who can help us listen, understand what each area needs, and shape FYL around the community rather than asking every community to fit one model. An Ambassador wouldn’t own or speak for the whole community. Neither do I. We all make up this community. FYL will be shaped by the families, group leaders, providers, and neighbors who show up, share, and help one another find their way.
What makes this work is all of us showing up for it. FYL will do its part: I will keep building, keep tending it, and work to keep it useful and honest. Your part is simple. Share the place you love, the resource that saved your week, the group that welcomed you, or the person worth knowing.
Because sharing is carrying. When one of us puts something helpful into the community, we are carrying the family we may never meet who needed exactly that. Homeschool families already do this beautifully. It is one of the most natural things in the world to us.
Yes, FYL will need responsible ways to keep the lights on as it grows. But it will never be through selling your family’s privacy, and the community experience should never feel like one long advertisement. Any future promotions or optional support opportunities will have their own clearly marked place - not interrupt the reason you came here.
I would not be standing here without the people who carried me first: my military homeschool groups, my RV homeschool community in California, the online school in Illinois that kept us going through a move, and my homeschool hangouts here in Massachusetts. To every parent who shared a resource, pointed me toward the right person, or simply told me I was doing okay - thank you!
To my husband and my boys, thank you for cheering me on and telling me to keep chasing this. And to the homeschool moms who have advised me, guided me, and held me up through all of it: thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
Why am I doing this? For my family, for yours, and for the homeschool families still to come.
